I have been in the military a little over ten years; between active
and inactive duty Air Force, Air National Guard, and Reserves. I am
currently in the military at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst NJ, a
full time college student, and a full time single mother of five
precious children (ages 10, 6, 6, 5 and 4). Two of my children are
adopted, and have multi-impairing severe disabilities. To include,
but not limited to: severe autism, moderate to severe mental
retardation (aka. intellectual impairment), encephalopathy, seizure
disorders, developmental delay, failure to thrive, fetal alcohol
syndrome, severe cerebral palsy, and sensory processing disorder.
Their ability to function is limited in the areas of eating,
tasting, talking, feeling, walking and moving.
If I had a wish for them, it would be to build a sensory room or
safe place for the children to play and help stimulate all the
areas that lack developmentally. The ideal room would include,
thick padding for walls and floor, therapeutic swings, ball pit,
and possibly lights and sound to stimulate the sensory area's that
lack.
