I looked it up. In Virginia, the DMV offers a refund if unexpired
vehicle tags are returned with at least six month remaining on
them. Don't think they do that here in Michigan.

Many hospital also have financial assistance programs for folks
with no insurance or inadequate insurance and low income. My
husband has no insurance and does not qualify for Medicaid. We have
had several hospital bills totally forgiven through such a program.
I hope you can get this all worked out. I also don't know what a
DMV refund is. I'm confused about the student loan as well. Did
they withold just the portion that would have been refunded to you
after classes were paid for, or did they take it all so you could
not attend classes at all? I have never heard of something like
this happening, especially for a hospital bill; perhaps if there
was an outstanding federal debt such as taxes. Was it possibly a VA
hospital? I know they will withold tax returns for unpaid bills.

|
I would definitely check into this, because it doesn't sound quite
right. I also live in VA. Most of the times, hospitals only take
your state refund. Courts and child support take your federal
return. Nobody touches student loans. And what is a DMV refund?
What hospital is this through. Bon Secours has payment plans (even
if you are in collections), and MCV works with you, even if you can
only pay $10 a month.

I live in Virginia and I have no idea what a dmv refund is and they
sure cannot take your student loan to pay a hospital bill. You
should call the hospital in question and make payment arrangements,
or if it has gone to collections make arrangements with them. Most
hospitals will work with you as they know that a lot of people are
uninsured.

I agree with Sqbear..I would think there would have to be a court
order on file through the civil court somewhere locally, not sure
how you can obtain this. So if there was a hearing and you didnt
show up, they can file a default judgment against you and then
garnish whatever is necessary.
|
|
At this point it may be too late to make payment arrangements, but
it can't hurt to try. Yes they legally CAN garnish wages/returns as
they have now have a court order to do so. Being an ex paralegal i
know this for a fact. It does take longer than a year.
Sounds like they sent a summons and she was not at that address, so
the court will proceed without her. This happens all the time. But
before it got to this point i'm sure the billing dept was calling
and asking about payments, that was the time to tell them you
couldn't pay, they have Patient Advocates to help with these
things, this was when you could have asked about payments.
But it now sounds like it has gone way beyond the point of
"talking" again can't hurt to ask again.

If they did send a summons they sent it to an address I no longer
live at :(

Call the hospital and talk to the billing department and ask about
financial assistance programs. Most hospitals have these programs.
From what you are saying, Im assuming that this hospital bill is
just a year old and they are already garnishing your refunds? In
order for this to happen, the hospital would have had to turn you
over to a collection agency and the collection agency would have
had to file a judgment against you in court, but a year out that
would have happened very quickly. You would have gotten something
in the mail, or served a summons for this to happen. I dont know
how the hospital can legally just take your loans, refunds without
having a court judgment against you or trying to work out a pmt
arrangements with you first.
Call this place AT ONCE! Take to a rep there, they are very
helpful. Sounds like you need a debt crisis intervention, and they
are the people who can help you. I speak from experience.

I do not have transportation to get to that hospital. That hospital
is in Richmond I am in Woodbridge. :(

I do not have any kind of insurance that is correct. I am in the
state of Virginia. Ive tried telling them I have only enough income
to pay my rent but they won't listen to it. As soon as I say I
can't make a payment they hang up.

Go to the hospital, ask to speak to a Social worker, they should of
assigned you one back when you were in the hospital. explain your
situation to that person and see if they will let you make payment
arrangements. take all the paperwork that you have about this when
you go. if you make arrangements befire it goes to collection they
will usually work with you. good luck

taxpayers are paying the bills for medicare, medicaid, and of
course the illegals we're plagued with. Obviously this wisher is
not on medicaid or any other government (tax payers) insurance thus
causing her to have the bill. Jessica, I DO know what it's like to
have your Gallbladder removed and have to worry about a big bill
that insurance doesn't cover..I've been there, as a taxpayer and
single parent. I feel your pain. But I guess laws may be different
in each state, I've never heard of medical past dues effecting
things like tax returns and what nots in Florida, but I guess they
can in your state. Is this 12,000 wish to pay the medical bill? You
can go down to the hospital and possible see about reducing the
bill with your proof of income, or LACK of income. Praying you get
out of this mess. It sucks, but keep your chin up and keep making
phone calls to get it reduced . good luck
