$3000 to train my non verbal autistic sons autism service puppy

Granted by Heroes: Guest
Hi, I am posting today looking for a very special person to grant a wist for my son. He has autism and cannot speak. He bashes his head against walls, floors and people when upset. He is a wanderer/runner and has on occassion darted into roads or ran from our home. I am constantly on alert and have gates now installed on windows and doors with locks attached to them. We struggle to go places as he will drop to his knees and lay down, kicking and screaming. People look at me like I am a bad parent and he is a bad kid. We cannot go out to eat. I considered a service dog for him but the cost and fundraising time put it on hold. This is something he needs sooner, rather than later. After his neurologist recommended a dog for him I got to work. He is calmed by large animals, and a large dog could provide safety and security for him. I purchased a Newfoundland puppy from a breeder with the intent I would train her. We have met with one trainer who informed me she is the perfect dog, has a great temprament, and has what it takes. The problem is, with 4 children (one extreme special needs), a house to clean, cooking to do, etc. I have gotten in over my head and do not believe I can train this dog. She will change my sons life, all our lives. I want her trained in search and rescue, deep pressure therapy, boundries, behavior interuption and tethering/ancoring. On trial runs with her and my son she has walked perfectly with him at the zoo and different stores (see profile pic of them) and even allowed him to eat at McDonals for the first time ever. She calms him and he is able to focus better on what we are doing instead of trying to break away and run. But at this point her special training is just a dream, and honestly we have spent all our extra money on her and cannot afford to have her trained. I would cut off my hand to help my son, but I have no experience training dogs. $3000 would allow me to have her be trained properly and change our world. Thank you.

Thanks pictureperfect! I emailed ADUC, hope they will be able to help. I spoke with my sons caseworked to see if his autism waiver funding could pay for some of it, but was informed that it has to be a program trained, ready to go dog, and that just isn't what I am looking for. So, I hope this week will bring good news.

here is a list of places that offer assistance for training dogs,Is there any source of financial help for the costs associated with getting and keeping a service animal?

Some trainers have scholarship or financial assistance programs. Since service animals meet health needs, people should investigate whether their medical insurance or entitlement (Medicare, Medicaid, VA benefits) will cover any of the costs. Civic and charitable organizations sometimes provide financial assistance. These organizations can include local:

• Lions
• Elks
• Chamber of Commerce
• Diagnosis-related Associations
• Alumni Associations
• Other resources

Network within your community and the resources listed on this web site to locate possible funding sources.

The Assistance Dog United Campaign (ADUC) provides financial assistance in the form of vouchers to individuals with disabilities seeking to obtain a service dog/assistance dog from a member program. Information about applying can be ob
