In July of 2011, a single moment turned her life upside down. Her
mother was taking her to a hospital, driving down a mountainside,
when suddenly her brakes failed. “ I was frozen
to deathâ€, Zulia recalls, “ The
only thing that my brain could register was the fact that the car
was going downhill with a super high speed. And that my mother was
a driverâ€. Soon after that, the car fell off the
cliff. “ As paramedics were taking me out of the
car, I started searching for my mother. And I saw her lying
unconscious on the ground covered with blood. Looking at her, the
only thing I could was begging medics to transport her first, but
everybody was busy trying to save my life. If I ever knew that it
would be my last time seeing my mother, I would have said how much
I love her. And tell her that she can rest in peace: I will never
ever give up and fight to stand back againâ€.
Zulia suffered a spinal cord injury, leaving her a paraplegic with
no use of her legs. Doctors gave her little chance of walking, but
Zulia refused to accept that. She has found the strength inside to
fight. She says, “ No matter what doctors tell
me, deep inside I believe that I will walk and stand up again. Even
if the whole world were against me, as long as I have that faith to
recover, I’m certain I can stand back
againâ€. Her determination to "never give up" became
the cornerstone of her new life. She is working hard, and with
faith as her guiding light, to beat the odds.
She experienced the fear that she would never move any part of his
body again, but turned the fear into a challenge. She has spent the
last year gaining strength and improving her mobility. She can now
pull and push her legs! Unfortunately, she lost her Medicaid that
used to cover her rehabiliation therapies recently. For this
reason, we have to raise money to receive exercise rehabilitation
therapy.
