Here's the issue. I am a type 1 Insulin Dependent Diabetic, on a
strict low sugar, low carb diet. I recently was downsized from my
job, along with several other newer employees. I have been to DHS
here in Illinois, but because my boyfriend (whom I am living with)
is employed, and because most of the bills are in his name
(utilities and such), DHS has denied me food assistance. The
problem is, is that he is only making just over minimum wage where
he works, and can barely cover the major bills to begin with. When
you add on the extra expense of purchasing diabetic friendly foods
(sugar free, low carb, splenda, etc), it's nearly impossible. A bag
of splenda is nearly $6.00. The sugar free syrup or jelly is twice
as expensive as the normal stuff,on top of him now trying to cover
my test strips, insulin, lancets, and other medical supplies (which
we're falling short on as well, he doesn't have enough to cover the
bills plus my medical plus my food). I've been to a couple of the
food pantries, but they don't really supply any special needs
products. If there is anyone in the area who might be able to help
me out getting food for the next few weeks (while I search for a
new job), it would be really appreciated.
Are there any hero's out there who might be able to provide me with
possibly gift cards or certificates to any of the grocery stores
around here? We don't have much, a Bill's IGA, Randy's Market, and
the Super Walmart. I just learned about Angel Food Ministries as
well. The closest location to us is posted below in a link.
Anything right now would be greatly appreciated. Without eating I
can not take my insulin, and without my insulin, I am in serious
trouble.
***Update***
Below is a list of items that I am still desperately needing right
now...
Milk (1% or Skim)
Meat (hamburger, chicken, etc)
BUTTER
Cheese
Orange Juice
Wheat Bread
SPLENDA
Any fresh Vegetables or Fruit
Whole Wheat Pasta noodles

I want to extend a huge thank you to the Illinois Chapter, the Walk on Hero's foundation, and the entire WUAHF for all of the kind words, words of advice, and assistance that they have given me. Granting this wish means more to me than you could ever know, and I am so grateful to everyone who helped out on this. Thank you so much again!!!

Thank you so much to everyone who helped me with this wish! Yesterday, Jeanene showed up at my front door with a pickup truck FULL of food and household supplies to grant this wish. Meats, Fruits, Veggies, insulin, test strips, cleaners, personal supplies, and more, that will for sure last at least a couple of weeks, while I get going with this new job that I started yesterday. Thank you so much Jeanene, you are a true Hero!

Ok. To update this a little...I went to the Staunton Food Pantry on Tuesday.... I received 1 paper grocery sack of food (canned veggies which I can eat, canned fruit which I can not eat, a loaf of bread, and 2 hamburger helper pasta meals, which I can eat in careful moderation). Along with the sack of food, I received a coupon for Bill's IGA good for 1lb of hamburger, 1 gallon of milk, and a dozen eggs. This will last me a couple days (the milk and eggs will last about a week). I am still in great need of meats (hamburger, chicken, anything like that), Butter, and diabetic friendly food products.

Yes, I did (and unfortunately I can't take it back now, I wish I'd have known). I did list my medical expenses, but they claim that if he makes $1500.00 gross per month, that he can support us both, even with the medical expenses. After his car payment, our month to month neccissary bills, and his gas to get back and forth to work, it leaves very little money left over. Thank you both for your advice, and best wishes. I appreciate it very much. Misty, I hope your sister takes my words (in pm) to heart. She's too young to start having the issues I did because of my negligence. God bless guys!

do you put your boyfriend on the application for foodstamps with you? YOU also can put your medical expenses on the application too. make sure you have up to date info on prices of your supplies and rent/utilities. My sister has tons of unused lanclets if i had postage i could send to you. i'm glad to hear that you actually eat the way you are susposed to my sister who is 16 has been diabetic for 4-5 years and she never checks her blood sugar and eats whatever she wants and as a result her diabetis is out of control. pm me and maybe we can come up with something

Like you I am a diabetic, I use both insulin and pills (as I am a type 2 diabetic). Although I can't financially help you wout with food I can tell you of a place that can help with the cost of medications. I am in the process of applying for assistance from PPArx.org (my doc has the paperwork to fill out his portion and then he will send in). You might have seen a Montel Williams for the program. I have used it before and it helps. I know Eli Lily (insulin) and Lifescan (One Touch Meters) participate in the program. If you qualify (based on your income, or lack thereof) you can get medications/meter(s) free or low cost. I am able to get my insulin, meter, test strips and Avandia (my most expensive output meds wise) for free. The rest I qualified for low cost but there was only about a $6.00 difference between the program and the pharmacy as they are generic meds so I opted to continue with the pharmacy with those. I hope this helps. Good luck.
