GRANTED!

I WISH our son had ears to hear like every other child

Hello, we are a family of 4 & our youngest son, who will be 6 in July was born with Bi-Lateral Microtia. This means he was born without ears. With the help of his hearing aid,he is able to hear & speak just fine. With out the aid he is completely deaf. Since he was born, my wife has dedicated her life to finding the best specialists, doctors, teachers & insurance to provide the best care for our baby. You see at the age of 6, we can proceed with the reconstructive surgery of his outer ears which is scheduled to start July 8 in CA. After the reconstructive surgery which will take approx. 14 to 18 months to complete, we can then proceed with the reconstruction of his inner ears. 2 to 3 years from now he has an astounding 85% chance to hear normally without his aid. She up until recently had accomplished it all. Our hopes &dreams for our son were then crushed when the insurance company denied our claim, saying he did not need ears to live life. The magnitude in which this condition affects his life continues to grow has he gets older. Parents of children without a hearing loss, could not begin to imagine how this affects his life. He can not go out in the rain. His hats, caps & hoods all have holes in them to accomadate the aid with out the painful feedback. Nothing can touch the aid without it sending a high pitched squeel into his skull. For him to play t-ball this year, my brother had to drill a hole into the helmet and remove the protective padding to again eliminate the very uncomfortable feedback sounds. He is totally deaf in the bath, the pool & on the beach. Small things such as these are starting to hold him back as he gets older. That is really just the beginning, here are adults & kids who ask what is wrong with him. AND the insurance company denies this child ears for the chance to hear normally? The surgery is over 100,000, without traveling expenses. Any financial help is appreciated.

Hello, just viewed this wish for the first time.It sadens me so much to see a lil boy and his family have to go through so much, emotionally, mentally, and financially(thanks to great insurance coverages). To also know his anxiety about the surgery also sadens me.He sure is a cute lil boy,I have one around his age as well, that also sucks his thumb still when he sleeps.People question that, but my son wouldnt be him if he wasnt sucking his thumb still, and I find it rather precious ;)I just dont sweat those lil habits, because in time, they will pass and go away as he grows.I would love to help, but unable to right now.I will mark it favorite, and get back and send something. Any updates on him? I am praying for his progress, speedy recovery and family.God Bless ALL these Heros ;)

Hello everyone, just wanted to give an update of our progress. It has been a few weeks since my last comment because we ran into a couple of bumps in the road to recovery for him.He came down with several severe infections at the rib removal site, which most recently led us to an emergency visit to a specialist at NYU.He also had 2 abcests, which we very scary. After being on heavy antibiotics for the past 3 weeks and after our visit to NYU, I am very happy to say everything has cleared up wonderfully. The first stage went great& we are thrilled. Now we are preparing for the next trip out in November to start the other ear. From then we have 3 more proceedures for each ear to get the final result.Still a long road ahead but we wanted to thank all our heros again for being so kind and generous. This wish is still open because we still have a lot of funds needed to get through the next 18 months so any further donations would of course be much appreciated.Thank you again to all the heros!!

I am so happy things are going well for Nick. Please do keep us updated with his progress. Always thinking of him and your family.

  • ConcreteFamily01verified member icon 12 months ago

Nick was released from the hospital and is recovering wonderfully. Had a post-op appointment in which the drainage tubes and some of the 100 stitches were removed. (more pain). He is such a trooper and we are so proud of him. He just told us last night as he cried "that he does want ears like his brother and the surgery is ok with him. He doesnt like when people ask him about his ears and what that thing is on his head." Hearing that as parents really assured us that wow everything is going to be ok. The doctor has been unbelievable. It really is magical what he does. Didnt mean to be so long winded but I feel I owe it everyone to keep u posted. Thanks again for all the support. We still have a long way to go but we're on our way. We will be home from CA soon and then back to CA in Nov. Thanks so so much!! *The Mommy

Hello everyone, just wanted to say thank you for all of your help. Every little bit helps since we are still in the process of dealing with the ins. co. We have gotten approvals then denials then EOB's stating we are 100% responsible instead of their misely 40%. I believe it will work out for us . Just an update right now we are in california. The surgery was Weds. and went very well. Besides the tremendous amount of pain he is in, we couldnt be happier. He's on heavy pain meds but basically just takes the edge off. Thank you again and we will keep yoou posted when we can. So much going on here!! One down 3 to go! Thank you again everyone.

Walk On Heroes had stated in previous committment below that they would place a $1 for each offer made up until July 8th, which was the date of this childs surgery. THere are currently 25 offers, so what I will do instead is place $5 in for each offer. Walk On Heroes with Administration approval will provide this wish $125. I truly hope others provide funds also.

Ok I apologize maybe I should have put a cap on the match. Walk On Heroes will match up to $750. I would love to be able to put $17,000 towards this wish but unfortunately Walk On does not currently have that kind of funds.
