GRANTED!

Wish Granted by: msloulee nedkate Dec 1, 2007

I WISH for a weighted vest for my 4 year old autistic daughter

Our apartment burned down back in September and we lost everything. I also had a baby the same day. My autistic daughter has reacted very badly. She barely sleeps is severely hyperactive and has behavioral problems.

She saw her Occupational therapist for the first time today and she said we should try using a weighted vest but we don't have the money to buy one. If anyone has one that they don't need in size 4 or 5, or knows how to make one we would be so greatful. The first link is to a story about our fire and the second is to a vest on ebay for $30. Thanks for looking at my wish,

Angel

My son needed a weighted blanket several years back...the vest ended up flying across the room everytime we put it on! lol. I spoke with the Autism society and they contacted United Way and in 2 days he was actually sleeping at night! Try it and I will cross my fingers for you and your beautiful daughter!

I wish I had one but my son never had one either. If I did id send it to you in a heart beat. Therapy helped my son SO MUCH. It was great. I pray your daughter responds well to it also. Shes very pretty and I hope she can get her vest.Is she a runner? If so please be careful. My autistic son escaped our home a few months ago and it resulted in his death. HUGS to you and her both.

Thank you. We are on the waiting list for the MR/DD Waiver but I was told it could take months or years before we get it. It would cover the things they keep telling me she needs like the vest, trampoline, computer programs like dt trainer ect.. Why is everything for special needs kids so expensive?

When my son was in preschool special ed we got a vest and they used it there. I sold it on ebay. The regional center funded it for us. Good luck. There are many on ebay that make them. We tried a deep pressure vest a few years ago with OT at feeding clinic and my son was not thrilled with it. We used to have the living room all set up with therapy stuff. We had a trampoline, bean table and a jumpolene used as a ball pit. My sons are now 11 and 12 so now we have a punching bag and an exercise bike. Good luck.

It has to be a vest because my daughter will throw blankets off. They used a vest on her today at her apointment and the ot said i should get one and try using it for 20 min every hour at home.

Your OT should be able to provide for one. Plus these can only be worn for a period of 20 minutes and not continuously. You may want to look into a weighted blanket at home or a weighted lap pad instead. You could also request one through the school district to try out in the classroom beforehand.
