For an iPad so my speech delayed autistic son can better communicate with his critically ill dad

Granted by Heroes: WishUponAHeroFoundation
I would love an iPad for my 4 1/2 year old autistic son so he can use the great apps available for the iPad that are geared specifically for special needs children to be able to "talk" to their parents and care providers. My son is very smart, especially when it comes to using electronics like our DVD player, the TV, and his little Leapfrog device. Unfortunately, my little boy has underdeveloped speech and has a difficult time telling his dad and myself what he wants or needs. As it is, we have never even heard the words every parent longs to hear, "I love you". My husband is bedridden and very ill due to complications from major abdominal surgery and bowel resection to remove a melon sized tumor. Because of this, he is unable to play with our son or interact with him the way he used to. An iPad would be a godsend because our little boy would be able to play games with his dad on it as well as be able to utilize the myriad of communication apps to be able to talk to his dad and to me as well. I'd love for them to have as much bonding time as possible in whatever time my husband may have left should the worst happen and having the communication barrier lifted would be truly amazing.

Dear Team Wish,

I cannot begin to express my gratitude for granting my wish for an iPad to help my son Ronin learn to better communicate with my husband, his brother and sister, and myself. In just the past couple days he has already picked up several new words and his pronunciation on a few trouble words has become a little clearer. He loves the alphabet apps because he can select the same letter as many times as he wants until he feels he understands it. Ronin has caught on so quickly that he already seems like an iPad pro. I love that in such a short period of time he has been able to learn as much as he has, whereas it was taking him weeks to pick up new words and phrases. I feel like there has been a whole new world opened up for him and we are finally able to break through some of the barriers in communication we were having. I was so excited when he woke up yesterday morning and said he was happy, and said it completely clear. He has struggled so much with "h" words.

AMAZING WISH COME TRUE!!!!! WTG

I called just about everyone I knew just to announce that my almost 5 year old said "happy" and not "appy". It probably seemed silly or trivial, but this is something we've been working on for over 6 months. Ronin just seems so much more confident in his speech exercises because he can have the iPad repeat his lessons as many times as he needs to without worry that he is going to be rushed to finish. The smile on his face when he is working on his new learning tool is enough to make anyone smile back. Last night he curled up in bed with his dad and they read the Toy Story book together on the iPad and Ronin pointed out all his favorite characters and tried to explain what they were doing; I wish I'd been able to get a picture of it. Thank you so much for the amazing work you do, having my wish granted has truly been an amazing experience and my family would love to be able to give back in whatever way we can when we are able. You have changed our lives so much with your generosity.

Thank you all. I will be looking into what sort of options are available here, I've just been swamped with having to take my husband into the ER last night and then having him taken to a different hospital tonight via ambulance. Things have been a complete nightmare. I appreciate you all taking the time to respond to my wish for my son :)

I hope there is an Oregon Chapter and that they can contact Apple or even Walmart and see if they could offer you one for free or atleast a very discounted rate

Another autism parent was talking about a special book that they use pictures with to show their parents what they want/need? Perhaps you could make one? There are other "speech devises" for disabled people to use that maybe his health insurance would cover? I hope you get the help you need. Best Wishes.
